GarageDoorBossPro Blog — Technician App

The Time Clock in the Garage Door Tech App

Payroll at a small garage door company often starts with a question on Friday afternoon: “What time did you start Tuesday?” The tech guesses, the owner guesses, and the timesheet becomes a negotiation. A time clock on the phone the tech already uses for calls ends that conversation.

Same Phone, Same Login

Keeping the house record current is covered in New Opener, New Springs: How Changes on the Job Flow Back to the House. The time clock is simpler, but it touches every tech every day.

The GarageDoorBossPro tech app includes a time clock. Techs clock in and out on the same phone, with the same company login and personal PIN they use for their calls. There is no separate time app, no punch card on the shop wall, and no paper timesheet in the van.

Because the PIN identifies the person, each clock-in belongs to the right employee. A helper who rides with a tech clocks in under their own PIN, even if they never run a call.

Hours Recorded When They Happen

The biggest benefit of a phone time clock is timing. Hours are recorded as they happen, not reconstructed days later. That matters for a few reasons:

Setting House Rules

The app records the clock-ins. Your company decides the rules around them. A few worth writing down:

Clear rules turn the time clock from something techs worry about into something they don't think about.

Time Clock Plus the Call Record

The time clock does not stand alone. Each call also has its Start and Complete taps, which show when the tech began and finished work at that house. Put those together and the owner has a good picture of the day:

That picture is useful for more than payroll. It shows which calls take longer than expected, which helps the office plan routes and quote installs more accurately. It shows whether one van is consistently overloaded. And it gives the owner something concrete to look at when a day feels like it went sideways. The three buttons are covered in Start, Skip, Complete: The Three Buttons That Run a Garage Door Service Day.

Time Clock and Crew GPS

Crew GPS shows where techs are on the office map. Many companies find that the time clock and GPS together answer the questions that used to need a phone call: is the tech on the clock, and where are they? The office can see both without interrupting anyone.

Be upfront with techs about this. Tell them the time clock records their hours and the office map shows crew locations during the work day. Most techs are fine with it once they understand it is about running the day, not watching them. More on that in Crew GPS on the Office Map: Knowing Which Garage Door Van Is Closest.

Helpers and new techs use the same clock. A helper riding in the install van clocks in under their own PIN, even if the lead tech runs every call. That keeps payroll accurate for everyone in the van and means nobody has to remember on Friday who rode along on Tuesday. When the helper is ready to run calls, their hours history is already there.

It also helps the owner see the real cost of a job. Hours on the clock next to the Start and Complete times on each call show how long installs and repairs actually take, which is the starting point for pricing them well. Your prices stay yours; the time clock just gives you honest numbers to set them with.

Making It a Habit

The time clock only works if techs use it. Build the habit in the first week: clock in before opening the app's call list, clock out after the last Complete. A quick check at the end of the first few days catches missed punches while everyone still remembers.

After that, it becomes part of the routine, like grabbing keys and coffee. For the rest of the tech app, visit the GarageDoorBossPro garage door technician app page.
