Charging at Completion: Getting Paid From the Garage Door Tech App Before the Van Leaves
The door is back on track, the new springs are balanced, the opener runs quietly and the homeowner is standing in the garage watching it go up and down. That is the best moment to get paid. The customer is happy, the work is in front of them, and nobody has forgotten anything yet. Charging at completion means the invoice is settled right then, not a week later.
The Complete Button Does the Billing
How cards get saved in the first place is covered in Card on File for Garage Door Customers: How It Gets Saved and When It Gets Charged. This guide is about the moment that card gets used.
In the GarageDoorBossPro tech app, each job card has Start, Skip and Complete. When the tech taps Complete, the job closes, the invoice is created from the lines on the job, and the card on file can be charged. One tap, and the visit goes from “in progress” to “paid.”
What Happens on the Tech's Phone
The tech app runs in the browser on iPhone and Android and installs to the home screen. There is no app store and no special card reader to carry. A typical finish looks like this:
- The tech wraps up the work and takes the after photos.
- If the job includes a door safety inspection, the tech finishes the checklist, readings, condition and recommendations.
- The tech taps Complete.
- The invoice is created with the job's lines and sales tax, and the card on file can be charged.
The office sees the job done, with photos, notes and the invoice attached, without a phone call.
Getting the Lines Right Before Complete
Because the invoice comes from the job, the job needs the right lines before the tech taps Complete. On a planned job, those lines came from the approved estimate. On a repair call, the office books the service call and the repair the customer described, then adjusts if the tech finds more.
If the tech finds worn rollers or a frayed cable and the customer agrees to the extra work, the tech notes it and lets the office know, and the office adds the lines to the job. A quick text between the tech and the office before Complete keeps the invoice matching the work. Adding on-site work is covered in Added on Site: Turning Rollers, Weatherstripping and a New Remote Into Invoice Lines.
Talking to the Customer at the Door
Charging at completion goes best when the tech says a few words before tapping the button. Something like: “Everything's done. You had the service call, the pair of springs and new rollers. That'll go on the card you have on file, and the invoice will be in the app.” Ten seconds of explanation prevents most questions later.
The tech does not need to handle money, make change or ask for a card number. The card is already saved, and the customer can open the invoice in the customer app whenever they like.
When There Is No Card on File
Not every customer has a card saved. When the tech taps Complete on one of those jobs, the invoice is still created. The customer can pay it online in the customer app, and if it goes unpaid, past-due follow-up goes out by text and email. The tech can also mention the customer app on the way out: “Your invoice is in the app, and you can pay it there.”
Over time, asking every new customer to save a card means more jobs get paid at completion and fewer end up on the follow-up list.
Why the Driveway Beats the Kitchen Table
A lot of small garage door companies still invoice at night. The owner sits down after a long day, finds the paper tickets, tries to remember whether the second call was one spring or two, types up invoices and sends them. Some get missed. Some get the wrong price. All of them get paid later than they could have.
Charging at completion skips that whole routine. The invoice is built from the job, the tax is added, and the card on file is charged while the customer is still standing next to the door that works again. For a one-van owner, it can mean an evening back every week.
One Tap, Paid Job
The Complete button is where the work and the money meet. When it creates the invoice and charges the card, the job really is done. For the rest of the money side, from auto-charge to monthly statements for property managers, visit the garage door invoicing software page.
Paid Before the Van Backs Out
